Charlton Athletic v Walsall Preview
Charlton Athletic v Walsall Preview

These are the times when a football manager has to earn his corn. Two games in three days is far from ideal and Chris Powell will have to take tiredness into account when he names his team.

Walsall have won just two of their twenty games on the road, but have drawn eleven with seven defeats. The Saddlers, despite their lowly position, have lost just once in their last twelve outings. Clearly, they draw too many matches and Powell will be hoping that their midweek fixture will drain their energy levels.

Every player in Charlton’s team on Saturday put in a shift and playing with nine men for a chunk of the second half was the last thing they needed.

Sheffield Wednesday are again involved in a lunchtime game, hosting Oldham, so Charlton will know their result before they kick-off.

One of the things the manager will have to ponder is the shape of his side. With Hollands, Russell and Hughes being unavailable through suspension and injury, Powell could opt for the three man back line that finished the game at Oldham.

However, he has stuck steadfastly with 4-4-2 throughout the season and has enough options to go with his favoured formation.

The defence is likely to be unchanged but serious thought must be given to the midfield quartet. Warranted he has overcome a bout of illness, Danny Green is likely to come back on the right, though Danny Haynes who travelled to Oldham, and Bradley Pritchard could come into the equation.

Pritchard will be a serious contender to partner Dale Stephens in the middle but Powell could play Johnnie Jackson in his favourite position.

If Powell opts for Pritchard in the middle, then he will have to choose between Jackson, N’Guessan and Cook for the berth on the left.

Kermorgant received the usual strong arm treatment on Saturday and got through a prodigious amount of work.

If the manager decides his Gallic warrior needs a rest then Dany N’Guessan could partner Wright-Phillips – who is sure to return – up front. The Addicks could look like this:

Hamer; Solly, Cort, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Stephens, Pritchard, Cook; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Taylor, Jackson, Haynes, N’Guessan.

The referee will be David Phillips from West Sussex.

The adrenalin rush from Saturday’s inspired win will, hopefully, be enough for the Addicks to gain another three valuable points.
